Common Position naming system (CP system) allows easy comparison between human caspase paralogs by providing a unified naming scheme for referencing amino acid positions.
CP system is based on structure-guided multiple sequence alignment of human paralogs where each position is classified into three categories. Common positions (CP) are amino acid positions with 100% occupancy in the alignment, gapped positions (GP) are positions with missing residues in at least one capsase paralog, and prodomain positions (PD) are positions of the caspase prodomain that precede the first highly conserved CP position, CP-Y001.
In total, CP system includes 275 prodomain positions, 218 common positions and 81 gapped positions.
